Easter Sunday is different. The law requires large shops in England and Wales to remain closed rather than choose a six-hour trading window.
That means there is no afternoon closing time such as 4pm or 5pm for a large branch that is closed all day.
Why the Usual Sunday Hours Disappear
Most ordinary Sundays allow qualifying large shops to choose six consecutive hours of retail trading between 10am and 6pm.
Easter Sunday is one of the statutory exceptions. Large shops must close, just as they must close on Christmas Day under the relevant trading rules.
Small Shops Are Treated Differently
The statutory closure applies to large shops. Small shops with a relevant sales area of no more than 280 square metres are not subject to the same Sunday trading restrictions in England and Wales.
This is important for ASDA because smaller Express-format stores should not automatically be assumed to follow the legal position of a full-size Superstore.
The actual Easter Sunday hours of any ASDA Express location should still be checked directly because the retailer can choose to close or reduce hours even where the large-shop restriction does not apply.
Petrol Stations Can Be an Exception to the Large-Shop Rules
Petrol filling stations and service station outlets are among the categories exempt from the standard large-shop Sunday trading restrictions in England and Wales.
As a result, finding an ASDA petrol location open on Easter Sunday does not mean that the neighbouring full-size supermarket is open.
Late or holiday search results should always be checked for store format and address.
Scotland Is Different
Scotland does not have the same statutory Sunday trading-hour restrictions as England and Wales.
A Scottish ASDA therefore should not automatically be labelled closed simply because it is Easter Sunday. The branch’s own Easter timetable is the relevant source.
This national difference is one of the most important reasons not to use an England-wide answer for every UK ASDA.
What About Northern Ireland?
Northern Ireland operates under different retail trading arrangements from England, Wales and Scotland.
Rather than transferring the English large-store rule to an ASDA in Northern Ireland, check the branch’s Easter Sunday listing directly.
Could Click and Collect Still Operate?
Do not assume that a closed shop floor automatically answers every question about online orders or petrol services.
Collection availability is controlled by the slots and services ASDA makes available for the specific branch and date. If no Easter Sunday slots are offered, choose another collection date.
Planning an Easter Grocery Shop
If your usual large ASDA is in England or Wales, plan the main shop for Easter Saturday or another day rather than Easter Sunday.
