Everyday Groceries Are the Main Use
For most customers, an ASDA Gift Card works as a straightforward way to pay for an ordinary supermarket shop.
Eligible food, drinks, household products, toiletries and other qualifying products sold directly by Asda can generally be included in a purchase paid for in full or in part with gift-card balance.
The card can therefore be useful for anything from a small top-up shop to a larger weekly grocery order, provided the items are eligible.
You Can Use Gift-Card Value Towards George Purchases
ASDA and George gift cards can be used for eligible products sold through George.
This includes qualifying George.com purchases as well as eligible in-store spending where the card is accepted.
If you are shopping online, gift cards are handled as a payment method rather than through the ASDA Rewards Cashpot system.
You Cannot Use an ASDA Gift Card to Buy Another Gift Card
Gift cards themselves are excluded from purchases made with ASDA eGift Card value under Asda’s current terms.
In practical terms, you cannot normally use existing gift-card balance simply to convert it into a new gift card.
Tobacco Is Excluded
Asda specifically excludes tobacco from the products that can be bought with an eGift Card.
This means a gift-card balance should not be treated as a general-purpose payment method for cigarettes or other excluded tobacco purchases.
Petrol Is Also Excluded
ASDA Gift Card value cannot normally be used to buy petrol under the current eGift Card terms.
The card is also not accepted as a general payment method at Asda petrol stations under those terms.
This is an important distinction because an Asda supermarket and the petrol filling station beside it may be part of the same retail site while following different gift-card rules.
Lottery Tickets and Scratch Cards Are Excluded
You cannot use the relevant ASDA Gift Card balance to purchase lottery tickets or scratch cards.
These exclusions apply even if the products are available from a counter within an Asda store.
Phone Credit Top-Ups Are Excluded
Mobile phone credit top-ups are another category that Asda excludes from eGift Card purchases.
If your basket combines normal groceries with an excluded top-up, another accepted payment method may be required for the excluded part of the transaction.
Postage Stamps Cannot Be Bought With the Card
Postage stamps are included in Asda’s current list of gift-card exclusions.
This is easy to overlook because stamps may be sold from within the supermarket, but being sold inside Asda does not automatically make a product eligible for gift-card payment.
Third-Party Concessions Can Have Different Rules
Products or services supplied by third-party concessions are excluded under Asda’s gift-card terms.
A concession operating inside an Asda store can therefore have its own payment arrangements even though it is physically located within the supermarket.
What About Alcohol?
Alcohol is not listed among the standard product exclusions in Asda’s current eGift Card terms.
That means eligible alcohol purchases can generally be paid for with an ASDA Gift Card where the card is accepted, subject to all normal age-verification and licensing requirements.
This is different from some ASDA Rewards Voucher rules, particularly in Northern Ireland, so it is important not to mix up gift-card terms with Rewards Cashpot terms.
A Mixed Basket Can Still Use Gift-Card Value
Suppose your basket contains £45 of ordinary eligible groceries plus an excluded product.
The presence of the excluded product does not turn the entire shop into an excluded transaction. Gift-card value can be applied according to the eligible payment rules, while another accepted method may be required for anything the gift card cannot cover.
Can You Use the Card for Online Shopping?
Yes. Eligible ASDA Gift Card or eGift Card value can be used with online Asda shopping, subject to the relevant card and product conditions.

Gift-Card Balance Is Not Cash
You cannot normally exchange the remaining balance of an ASDA Gift Card for cash, and no cash change is given when you spend less than the value available on the card.
Instead, the remaining balance stays associated with the card for future eligible purchases while the card remains valid.
