Why Can’t I Check Out My ASDA Order?

If an ASDA grocery order will not check out, do not assume the trolley itself is the problem. Checkout depends on several separate things working together: your account, delivery or collection availability, payment card, bank verification and the final order confirmation.

Why Can't I Check Out My ASDA Order?

Asda’s current grocery terms confirm that checkout includes card verification and a 3D Secure authentication check, so a payment-stage failure can stop an otherwise valid trolley from becoming an order.

First Question: Are You Getting Stuck Before or After Payment?

This distinction can save time when troubleshooting.

If you cannot reach payment

Check the account, delivery or collection selection and trolley for any message asking you to complete another step.

If payment itself fails

Check the card details, your bank’s authentication request and whether the payment card meets Asda’s online grocery requirements.

Reason 1: Your Card Cannot Pass Verification

Asda contacts the card issuer during checkout and performs both a 3DS authentication check and a pre-authorisation.

The purpose is to verify the card rather than immediately charge the full grocery bill.

If your card issuer declines the verification or you fail to complete the authentication request, checkout may not complete.

Reason 2: The Card Does Not Meet ASDA Grocery Requirements

Asda’s current grocery terms require customers placing an order to have an acceptable credit or debit card in their name.

The terms also state that grocery orders must be paid using a UK-based credit or debit card.

If you are trying to use a payment method outside the supported grocery-payment rules, changing products in the trolley will not solve the checkout problem.

Reason 3: The Bank Is Declining the Pre-Authorisation

A pre-authorisation checks that the card details are valid and that the payment process can proceed.

If the bank does not approve it, Asda may be unable to confirm the grocery order.

Check your banking app for a declined transaction, authentication request or card restriction before repeatedly trying the same checkout.

Reason 4: You Have Not Completed 3D Secure

3D Secure can require you to approve the transaction through your bank’s app, a verification page or another authentication method.

If that step opens in another window or app and is not completed, you can return to ASDA Groceries without having actually finished the payment verification.

Watch for instructions from your bank rather than pressing the checkout button repeatedly.

Reason 5: You Are Not Eligible to Place the Order

Asda requires the person placing a grocery order to be over 18.

For delivery, the address must also be within Asda’s delivery area. Collection has to be from a participating Asda location available through the booking system.

A trolley can therefore contain valid products while the order itself cannot be completed for the selected account or location.

Reason 6: Your Basket Is Below the Standard Threshold

A small basket does not automatically prevent checkout, but it can add a minimum basket charge.

Asda currently states that delivery orders of £39.99 or less and collection orders of £24.99 or less attract an additional minimum basket charge under its grocery terms.

The current How to Shop page describes this more simply as a £40 minimum spend for delivery and £25 for Click & Collect before the minimum basket charge applies.

If the order total is lower than expected, check Your Trolley for the charge rather than assuming the site is adding an unexplained error.

Reason 7: An eGift Card Is Being Used Incorrectly

If you are paying with an ASDA eGift Card, it must be added using the eGift Card option at checkout with the appropriate card number and PIN.

It also cannot pay for excluded categories such as tobacco, stamps, petrol, lottery products, other gift cards and phone credit top-ups.

If your trolley contains excluded items, another accepted payment method may be needed for those products.

Reason 8: A Rewards Voucher Does Not Cover the Shop You Think It Does

ASDA Rewards Vouchers have their own spend threshold and excluded-item rules.

A voucher cannot simply be applied if the eligible value of the shop is below the voucher’s required spend threshold.

The ASDA Rewards guide explains the difference between Cashpot value, Rewards Vouchers and ordinary payment methods.

Reason 9: Your Delivery or Collection Choice Needs Attention

An online grocery order needs a valid fulfilment route before it can be completed.

If you are trying to book delivery, there must be an available slot serving the selected address. Collection similarly depends on available collection locations and slots.

A Delivery Pass does not guarantee that a slot exists. Asda explicitly says pass holders still choose from available delivery slots.

Reason 10: The Website or App Has a Temporary Problem

If the trolley, account, slot and payment card all look correct, a temporary technical issue is possible.

Try refreshing the page, signing back in or using the current ASDA app or website again before rebuilding the entire trolley.

Asda has announced further major upgrades to its online grocery technology, so the exact checkout interface can continue to change over time.

A Checkout Troubleshooting Order That Makes Sense

  • Confirm you are signed into the correct ASDA account.
  • Check the delivery address or collection selection.
  • Make sure an available slot has been selected where required.
  • Review Your Trolley for charges or payment restrictions.
  • Recheck the payment card details.
  • Complete any bank 3D Secure request.
  • Check whether a voucher or eGift Card has an eligibility problem.

A Failed Pre-Authorisation Is Not Necessarily a Completed Charge

Asda specifically states that its checkout pre-authorisation is not itself the final charge billed for the grocery order.

This distinction matters if your bank temporarily shows pending activity after an unsuccessful attempt.

The final grocery payment is based on the order that is ultimately delivered or collected, subject to Asda’s payment terms.

If Checkout Still Will Not Complete

If you have checked the payment method, account and booking details and checkout still fails, use Asda’s Help Centre or customer-service options.

ASDA Checkout FAQs

Why is ASDA asking me to verify my card?

Asda performs 3D Secure authentication and a pre-authorisation during grocery checkout to verify the payment card.

Does a basket below £40 stop ASDA delivery checkout?

Not necessarily. Asda currently applies a minimum basket charge when a standard delivery basket falls below its stated threshold.

Why did my card show activity when checkout failed?

A bank may show a pre-authorisation even though Asda has not taken the final payment for a successfully fulfilled grocery order.
